The new treaty on Caspian sea protection is to be launched in New York on the 17th of may 2007, as announced but the United Nation Program or Environment. The treaty is to implement the first constraining juridical frame, adopted by Russian Federation, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran. The inaugural conference is to take place in Azerbaijan on the 23rd to the 25th of May.
It seems to be a very encouraging beginning for cooperation between the five states surrounding the Caspian Sea regarding sustainable management of natural resources, which are closely linked to economic health of the region.
It is also a starting point and a welcome contribution to the worldwide effort towards climate change and biodiversity protection.
No doubt that the exploitation of natural resources, the pipeline crossing, petrol accidents and the over exploitation of fish reserves had to find reasonable compromise for the millions inhabitants to live in good condition in the long run.

A very intense piece of work proposed with the close collaboration of UNEP (United Nations Environement Programme). To be continued….

(more…)
